A big 5 weeker this month, plenty of good music and new people coming down to share their music collections and tastes.

February Listings

1^st – Matt Baker | Brokenhomes

February gives us a bumper month due to the magic of the leap year. This also means, I am expecting a lady to propose to a guy at Off The Record. We welcome back Matt for his sophomore set for more upfront house and electronic music. Ill be taking you through until close with my usual mix of genres.

8^th – Ray Juss | K15 | Steve James

This line up promises to be very dance oriented but then there are never any promises at Off The Record. Master of the keys K15 joins us once again and hints at a house set. Steve James, a long time friend is a big fan of 4x4 UK Garage and House. For my selection, I don’t have work the next day so who knows what my drunk self will pick!

15^th – Recordstore.co.uk – Martin Daniels | Andy Fenn | Robert Morgan

The Recordstore.co.uk team are back to provide vinyl music new and old and have picked up a new addition. Robert makes his debut at Off The Record but has plenty of skills under his belt. He runs the blog over at ifthereishellbelow.com with plenty of weird and wonderful music. Should be a wide and varied selection.

22^nd – Mo Sean | Grace Bassface and Piers as Fünf

I got an email from Mo Sean at the start of the year saying he had full access to his record collection. This could only mean gems! After his previous set, this could only mean more thrift store finds from the States. Grace Bassface and Piers DJ as the collective Fünf and will be playing up until close. With music from the soulful side, all the way to the bass heavy.

29th – Brokenhomes | Senior Girls Own

Another DJ duo join us at Off The Record for their debut set. First up is Helen aka Splinx who runs the label Helen Llewelyn Product Nineteen - http://www.hlp19.co.uk/ releasing them vinyls. Bonus points! There will be an exclusive spin of the latest release on the night so that’s a first. Following Splinx’s set will be Mindy who will be picking up the pace with older House cuts and bringing it up to date.

11th - Ray Juss | Bacary Bamba

So for this evening I will be sharing deck duties with Bacary Bamba who comes down for his second time behind the Wax Jambu turntables. An excellent sound track was provided last month so come down and hear some more great music. I will be taking you through the happy hour with them happy tunes!

18th - Ray Juss | Carlosbambos | Si Domone (WoodWork)

Back again on warm-em-up duties is myself and I am joined by good friend an my DJ teacher Carlosbambos. Carl comes down for his second set and more diva activities. Rum will be drunk to Motown or skippy UK Garage, who knows. On close we have Si Domone who reaches his hat trick tonight. Bring your dancing shoes for a set of music under the universal banner of House.

25th - Brokenhomes | Dickon Storme | Elliot Davies

There could be a birthday extravaganza this week with all 3 DJs celebrating their birthdays around this week. Greedykid (subject to commitments) will be opening up the set with whatever records I can lend to him. Next up we have a 'new' mystery DJ. Dickon Storme - emerging a bunker with thousands of record from the 60s, he has uncovered some gems that could include Ramsey Lewis, Funkadelic, Pigmeat Markham, War, maybe even some Pink Floyd.

So we reach another year, apparently, the end of the world will happen this year. I couldnt care less about these Mayan cats think. What this post is about is the tracks/music/themes that had a big part of my life through out the last year. They may have come out before 2011 but were important all the same. Also, you all know I listen to a lot of music and I still miss loads of genres but these few youtube links are what stuck out whilst writing this.

Action Bronson - SHIRAZ

After seeing him on a feature with another rapper, I had to find out more. Turns out he is (now) an ex chef turned rapper. Sweet raps about food I can't afford over excellent Tommy Mas beats.

Detroit CYDI - Yeah Bitch

Featuring one of my fave beatmakers in his rap singer group Detroit CYDI. Always had visions of playing this in East London and getting the whole crowd to sing along, maybe next year. Enjoy, Bitch

SebastiAn - Embody

There was a little funk/electro revival going on last year and this was one of the hi - lights. Sebastian was already one of my favourites from out of the ED Banger team (still <3 u Busy P) but this came out of nowhere. Good album too if you like the whole sound. He also proposed to that Royal sister chick via video screen at Lovebox. OOOOOOOOOWAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Death Grips - Guillotine (It goes Yah)

What can I say about Death Grips that you cannot make out from the video. One of the best drummers in the world teams up with a 'guy' to produce one of the most out there different albums in all of 2011. The show at the Old Blue Last was a sweaty anger fest.

jonwyane - dat ass

The Wayniac was on my radar from last year but his music was hard to come by. This year saw him start to put out music in a few beat tapes and albums. Next year should be a big year for him I hope. This beat, from the Doodles album kills it. (ignore the drunk walking man)

Lil B - Charlie Sheen

2011 was the year I finally caved into trap beats, swag rap and I guess the leader of it all, Lil B. Another show I caught at the Old Blue Last. Everyone was on stage cooking. Oh, if you know the girl in this video, get her to email me. SWAG WOO COOK

Samiyam - Kitties

Sam Baker released his album on Brainfeeder to much confusion. I think people expected more. Personally, Samiyam can do no wrong in my eyes. Guy is an animal on the 404, this one knocks. Oh yeah, caught him at Plastic People in '11 too. MEOOW

Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire ft. Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown, EL-P - The Last Huzzah

If Danny Brown dont make it as a rapper, he should get a job as an A&R. Almost blowing his load on twitter after finding the original video of this song The Muthafuckin eXquire went from zero to hero. The guys got together and made the remix to kill the remix. FYI, there is A LOT of ASS in this video. HUZZAH

TELL THE TRUTH - PROD. BY MOVM3NT

I miss Heatmakers. I really do. They have turned to rapping which is awful. Luckily, their sound lives on but in these weird trance pastiches. Made famous by Araab Musik this track is off one of the Trance mixtapes. Works for me.

Lil Z x OtrosCosmosis- I think im flying lotus

Flying Lotus show - Roundhouse, Camden where I lost my coat in the cloakroom for a month. Stood in the crowd shouting this song at people making remixes. When he played it, there was no reaction by the crowd. I think I made a 10 metre circle around me when I went nuts to it. COOKED HARD

Danny Brown - Monopoly

Following up The Hybrid with XXX on Fools Gold records turned Danny into an internet superstar. You can probably guess I like what Danny is doing right now. This was my favourite track from XXX. Includes references to badly seasoned fried chicken and shitting on CDs. Hell yeah

Mono/Poly - Punch The Troll In The Neck

Good to see Charles fully integrated into the Brainfeeder camp now. Another beat maker who will do even better things next year from what I have heard so far. This one kicked it off at the Crooked Tongues party. I was going nuts.(I was playing it)

DA-10 - The Future Is Futureless

The Off The Record night brought me some new friends. Some of these friends own a record label. One of their releases was this gem. Spent months humming the riff to this and got it as soon as it came out. Big up the WotNot music gang

Clams Casino - Illest Alive

Ill be honest, I slept on this dude for a while. He was giving these beats to rappers I weren't really feeling so I just passed them by. One afternoon, I downloaded his free (he gave these away) instrumental beat tape. Put it on in the background and done some work. Next few days I had them going round in my head and wondering where they had come from. On listening again, I realised that ClammyClams was something special. 2012 and even 13 will be the year(s) of Clams Casino

Dexter - Gimme No More

Kutmah is London's premier beat DJ and he had been haunting me with this beat all year. Every time I saw him play I wanted to know who had created this flip. Luckily, Kutmah is a guy and he told me. The search ended in me being £3 poorer but so much richer in my soul. CHOP

Toto - Africa

As previously mentioned, Off The Record started in 2011 and it has been a revelation for me and music discovery. It actually has been loads of things but there is too much to write here. If there was any one tune that sums up Off The Record and the good times we have every Wednesday, it would be this.

Off The Record - Christmas Blow Out 2011!!!

If the flyer was designed by Ronseal, (it wasn't) then this post would stop about.........here. BUT! It wasn't, so I am going to tell you a little bit more about the Christmas party for Off The Record. OTR started on the 22nd of June 2011. It was an eventful night, (click here for a run down with pics). Since then it has gone on from the completely disorganised to the relatively disorganised event it is right now! (that is just about me, its 1:47am so that should tell you how organised I am) So far, every man, woman and child that has come and played has been and absolute joy. Brining their brand new fan base along and always playing great music. I really do appreciate every one that has appeared at Wax Jambu on a Wednesday. If you have been, thank you. If you haven't come yet, well.. Santa is not gonna hook you up anythang nice.

So back to the party. Let me pour this coffee and break it down real simple for you.

The night starts at 6pm and ends at 12pm
Each of the 12 DJs has a 30 min slot to woo you with their tunes. They also have a 15 record limit.
There will be mince pies, choc treats, promo goodies and me moving around the venue spreading that Christmas cheer.
If anyone drinks enough drink to be ill, I will buy them a full Turkey dinner the next day. (This is a joke, I don't want anyone to be sick. Drink Responsibly)

There it is, our first Christmas party. I am looking forward to running a tight ship behind the desks and where else are you going to hear 12 DJs play off vinyl for free AND get fed? Not at Aunt Jean's or Uncle Tony's. Exactly!

7th - DJ Sosume Yufucka | Martin Daniels (Recordstore.co.uk) | Bacary Bamba

After a long and arduous legal battle, we have none other than DJ Sosume Yufucka all the way from Willesden gracing the decks. Not one to turn down a Christmas dinner, he has been using what's left of his legal fees to stock up on Christmas hits. If its your office party, you are going to pull tonight. After we have music industry himself. Taking time away from 'driving business' he will be gracing the decks with music acquired from one of the top 4 record companies in the world. Last but no mean least we have the newcomer Bacary Bamba. Following on from a link I received to one of his mixes, I had to put him on. Current music trends mixed with ones you know should close the night well!

21st - Ray Juss | mO'Sean | Ashley

If I said Ratpack, I wouldn't be talking about searching for a Rizla. Hopefully I can find the age old Nat King Cole/Dean Martin/Sammy Davis Jr record I had to listen to through my youth when Christmas came around. I will be playing all the best in crooning and sleigh-bell-selections. mO'Sean, a new addition to the Off The Record family will be playing (in his words) 'Ecclectic, electric and eccentric ,mostly funk based, roots and fusion! 7 inches too....rarified gems and sonic oddities!' Come down and see what he has. On top of that we have Ashley down once again who's collection knows no depth. The origins of samples, back bones of hiphop, male vocals, female vocals, everything. He is on close so expect him to hit the ground running!

28th - Off The Record Christmas Blow Out!

After an excellent 2011 at Wax Jambu, Off The Record will be celebrating Christmas in style! As we all know, there are 12 days of Christmas so for the night we will have no less than 12 DJs playing on the night. Genres will be crossed as if the DJs were one of the Three Kings. Gifts will be left in the form of chocolates, mince pies and goodies. Plus the drink will be flowing like the Rivers of Babylon!

After sucsescfully dealing with October, we move swiftly onto November. Famous for Guy Fawkes night where we set off lots of mini explosions in the name of the fellow who couldn't do his one explosion. Poor chap.

2^nd – Vue | Intalex | Lee ‘Hee-Man’ Henry

This week we have 2 new DJs to the Off The Record roster. Vue and Intalex or Carl and Alex. They have been popping down to Wax Jambu for a couple of weeks now and are ready to join the ranks. Both seasoned pros at the DJing game spending a lot of time in Switzerland and other exotic locations, they were also responsible for teaching me how to mix and giving me my first DJ name. DJ ‘Tunes you really like to hear and dance to’. That didn’t last. Our other entertainer is none other than the Hee-Man who has now graduated from Off The Record ranks to holding down a Thursday evening spot. Proud moments for me!

9^th – Filter ‘Power’ Taylor and Sodalicious | Klaus and Ray Juss

On Hundred and Eighty!!! Sorry, wrong write up. We welcome the kings of the filter back in the building for the 9^th of November at Off The Record. Due to legal reasons, I cannot name Filter’s previous DJ name but I can assure you, this re invention is wholly deserved. He has teamed up with his brother for a back to back set of the good stuff.

Klaus and I will be exploring the sounds of UK Garage amongst other things. Expect a lot of woodblock, off kilter rhythms and jerky drums

16^th – Recordstore.co.uk

Seasoned vets of the Off The Record shindig return once again to play you music new and old and from across the board. DJs for the night will be Andy Fenn and Martin Daniels. I will be leaving them in charge so go down and make some trouble (drink lots, dance and make obscure requests, like Chris Brown)

23^rd – Pete | Dave Metcalfe | Pesh (aka ‘The Right Admiral Funk & The Mobile Gramophone Disco’)

What I like about Off The Record is when people play and bring their friends down and then their friends want to get involved. This is just the case with Pete who is a friend of Dave who played a storming reggae set with the theme of reggae toasting records from the 70s. Plenty of good music from both I expect. Pesh, whose Facebook page I was introduced to a while back by Lee Henry got me interested. Finally, I have been able to track him down for a set. I hear Neptune is coming along; you wouldn’t want to miss that! Free Crabby Patties all night (this is of course false as they are fictional and a crab burger? Really?)

30^th – Naqwon | Brokenhomes | Elliot Davies

Unfortunately, Naqwon, aka Naqwon the Chef aka End of Level Boss couldn’t make his last booking due to having to meet a guy called Mario and something about a Princess? Anyways, he should be able to join us this week to play some of his favourite records. Brokenhomes, will be doing a rare (thankyou basedgod) performance playing all sorts of stuff and generally causing mayhem. The last set of the night and one I have been waiting for is Elliot Davies. Taking a quick break from his Ryan Gosling look-a-like work (its good work man!) he will be treating us to a quick paced mix of music from the tech/electro/minimal/house genres. Ladies, make sure you are here for this!

So it is Monday at 2am, you will probably see that on your FB or on here but thought that would be a good way of starting things off. Things have been very busy with Off The Record on this site and that is a a good thing. Previously it was like a post a month of not much really. Now, there is so much content on here I am thinking of a redesign.

The real meat of this post is, essentially, I am a DJ. 'Promoting' is fun but its a bi product of wanting to DJ more. The whole catch 22/chicken and egg theory. So to try and put myself in more clubs and get a or more (delete where appropiate) bookings, I have made a mix CD. In fact, I am going to make a Mix CD every month. The (late) October one will be filling the streets soon and I better get to work on the November mix pretty sharpish.

Got me a nice laser monochrome printer with a spare toner and some of that paypal money to make real music for y'all. Internet is fun and all but if you didn't feel it, it didn't happen. So she says.

I better get to bed, zombie mode out here

Another massive event in the Off The Record calender. Wax Jambu, the finest cocktail bar in London bar none (yeah I said it!) are involved in London Cocktail Week. Together with Pampero Rum we will be making you late for work on Thursday. Wait. You should book it off now. As part of the night, the cocktail wizards of Wax Jambu are inviting people to bring in an ingredient to be made into a tasty cocktail with Pampero Rum. Now, if you drink dirty dishwater or motor oil on a regular basis, then bring some in. But you'll probably be better off bringing in something sensible! Music on the night will be rum themed with reggae music coming from the Maharishi Hi Fi and Dave Metcalfe. Both first timers at Off The Record. The Latin funk will be coming from your favourite DJs favourite DJ, Mr Bensamba. Open until 1am, get them holiday forms in now!

Writing these blurbs can be pretty tricky. Like this one. What I can tell you though is all of these people plyaing on the 19th have already come down to Wax Jambu for Off The Record and enjoyed it so much that they want to get involved. Rie, originally from Japan, doesn't have her records with her but will be borrowing some from previous seleta, Cleophas. Louis P and Ashley popped in last month fully armed with records to play. 26th - Mike Lennon | K15 | Si Domone

Two new comers and one seasoned pro will be wrapping things up in October and should be a good one for the dancing crew. Mike Lennon, who runs Platter Records and works at Prime Distribution makes dubstep primarily will be treating us to a disco re-edit set. Been a while in coming but I am looking forward to this!
K15 was one of the first people to come down and play with the WotNot crew a few months back. A guy with excellent taste in music from his last set and also a fan of Pres T, this should be a varied and eclectic set. In closing, we have loacl lad Si Domone. Si, who runs a residency at CAMP every other month called WOODWORK, will be hitting us from all angles in his selection. Mentions of garage, afrobeat, hip hop and jazz there are sure to be heads nodding and feet a tapping!

What started out as a casual playing of some tunes, turned into one of the musical hi jackings of 2011!

The good people over at Protein let me come down and play some tunes on the last day of the Dante Fried Chicken x LDN Taco Shack pop up event. I have never seen food sell out so quick in all my life, it was like when the KFC in Bahamas ran out of chicken. Was crazy, I luckly got a taste of the excellent beef brisket and some biscuits and gravy. No camera so no snaps, would of needed taste-o-vision.

Lazebreaks had joined the party. Friend of Brokenhomes, Pei Chi was in the place taking pics and managed to snag us some bands. We annoyed the bouncers and got told off but later on, he was well laughing at my cooking dance. 7th - Peach | Cleophas | Matt Baker

First line up in September includes a very different mix of vinyl enthusiasts. First up we have Peach who will be making her 'DJ' début. Peach who has already been involved in the night by taking some pictures has taken an even bigger step and decided to come and play a slot for us. Recently spurned on to start her own record collection! From the demo I got from Cleophas you can expect a good mix of soul/hip hop/funk with some special gems he has collected over the years. Matt has recently been out in 'beefa' so will be closing the night with electronic house flavours.

14th - Dr. Wink Importer / Exporter | Klaus | Laurent Fintoni

With probably the best DJ name this side of the Galaxy Dr. Wink I/E (for short) plays music definitely from this planet but of the soul variety. His demo had me vibing at work so this should be fun. Klaus, who has released music on R&S has this Boiler Room mix online, judging by the depth of that track listing, we will be in for some treats. And finally we have Laurent Fintoni, (taken from the Rhythm Incursions site) 'Presenter, curator, content manager and the man currently in charge of looking after Rhythm Incursions and guiding it forward'. A guy who knows about the beats, helping compile the latest Finest Ego release.

21st - Naqwon | Greedykid | Lee Henry

Naqwon the chef aka End of Level boss is a music enthusiast and has decided after much persuasion to get behind the decks and play some records for us. Sounds of jazz and hip hop will probably be the order of the day. Greedy Kid, my younger brother, went and splashed out £30 on records especially for this set. Into the more broken beat side of things, we will all find out what gems he has uncovered. Lee 'HEE MAN' Henry appears for the second time at Off The Record. After his storming début, he caught the bug and was the first name down for September. Soul/Funk/Breaks and classic hip hop

28th - Will Furtado | Your Mumford and Sons | Ray Juss

Back once again are the Recordstore.co.uk team playing music from all over the globe. Will provides the funk and avant garde selections he is famous for and myself, Ray Juss will be playing classic tracks that only I could get away with. Your Mumford and Sons are a new DJ partnership of regular Martin Daniels and Andy Fenn. House/eclectic/Balearic/indie/schmindy all thrown in, get your drinks ready!

In a previous post I mentioned some ideas I had for some new things for Off The Record. So the idea to record to cassette definitely blossomed. Last Wednesday I picked up a tape deck (which I still need to test) and today my tape order came. Pretty cool getting 100 blank tapes and cases in the mail. Well not mail but delivered. I was at work and white van man kindly left the package in the lobby.

I also picked some 'box sets' as you can see above. Will be making some ultra limited collections with amazing things inside so keep your eyes peeled for those.

Each tape is 90 mins long, that is 45 per side. Sets will be recorded live direct to cassette from Wax Jambu with some slight ambience on the recordings. Obviously, there will have to be some testing to get the recordings right but I think they would sound good and be an excellent piece to own. I know tapes are not the most used format in the world now but the whole ethos of the night is harking back to the analogue times and these tapes will all be limited. (plus I will throw in a download code)

Anyway, keep telling your friends about the night. Got some imitators popping up round London so got to keep this the number one!

Andy Fenn, the B from remix outfit SFB will be playing an eclectic and Balearic selection of early house music. Martin Daniels, the manager of online record shop Recordstore.co.uk will entertain us with contemporary indie music from guitar based to electronic. And if those guys were the bread, Ray Juss will be cheese filling playing well known 80s tracks from 7 inch

10th - Genre - Bensamba and Lee Henry

Ben Samba, resident at the excellent Saturday nights at Wax Jambu will be digging in the crates for a special vinyl only set. Expect to hear some brand new music. On the other hand, Lee Henry, will be taking us through new and old hiphop and hitting us with the funk. Dancing shoes will be needed!

17th - Cynic - Jamie Blanco (Cynic, Figures) and Sunil Chauhan (Woofah)

Jamie Blanco, member of the electronic outfit Figures and about to have a release on Felix Dickinson's label Cynic, has a bag full of Baleric/Chicago house music that will soundtrack the evenings drinking. Sunil Chauhan will be bringing a mixed bag of the good stuff. There should be an excellent contrast in sounds.

24th - Orsii (Jazzman, Fatcity, Laid Back Radio) and Richard Walsh

Orsii, our first female guest at Off The Record (like that matters) will transfer her excellent on line radio shows from Laid Back Radio into the live arena. Richard Walsh, a friend of a previous Off The Record guest will be playing fuzzy Rock and other gems. There will be some special music played this night!

31st - Bradley Zero and Slackk (Numbers)

Bradley Zero, who already plays vinyl at Bar Story in Peckham will be playing a selection from soul/jazz/Detroit house/rock and African music. The other guest will be Slackk from the Numbers camp. He has dug deep and will be doing a full on disco set which will turn Wax Jambu in Studio 54 (or something!)

Off The Record - The Story So Far

So, it has been a while since I have put fingers to keyboard to just put some stuff out there but probably was about time to update y'all on how things are going with Off The Record at Wax Jambu. Also, I want to try and stay awake for the Kahn fight which is another hour and a half away, (it is 1:23 right now, [weird time])

Off The Record is slowly gathering momentum which pleases me greatly and although I did feel some pressure at the start of this venture, I have been so amazed at peoples willingness to get involved and help out with what they can. There have been some hurdles, no doubt and there have been some challenges but that was the whole idea of the project.

On the 27th of July, 2011 it will be the sixth week of Off The Record and things are starting to fall into place and enhancements are being made all the time. Getting people involved is getting a bit more organised, that is just down to me and my organisational skills. The flyers have now landed, all 5000 of them and I will be distributing them across London's remaining record shops and other trendy places. The ustream is starting to pick up and will be looking into trying to make the view a little better for the people that log on across the world. I have added a page here on the blog, that links direct to the ustream and I will be adding more stuff to that page when I think about it a little more. But generally, the feedback has been very positive so far from teh excellent people behind Wax Jambu and the people I have spoke to and came down and played. I am very thankful to everyone involved, Thank you.

Some future enhancements to the night which I have thought about or have been discussed are

Live mixes from the night with bar ambience in the back ground available to download
Tracklistings from the mixes
Interviews with the people that come down and play
Change of the camera angle for the ustream
DJs needing to dance more on camera ;)
More themed nights, ie 7 inch only, soul night, ska night

Who knows how much of a monster (in all positive aspects) Off The Record will be? It doesnt have its own twitter or website, just running through here but then, its a vinyl only night. Gotta try and keep most of the old skool ethics alive! It has rekindled my energy and enthusiasm for DJing, buying records and gets me excited on a Wednesday. Have met some great people as well and chats about music and strange record covers is what I want to do on a Wednesday evening. Just hope there are some other people out there who want to also.

Welcome back to another episode of the good stuff. The place where the cocktails are amazing, the beers magically double up before 8pm and the music is always played off them shiny (sometimes dusty) black discs. That's right folks, its Wednesday between 7pm and 11pm and that means its Off The Record!

This week I will be joined by two special guests. First up is Danny Lowe who could be treating us to a selection of crazy Bolloywood and Moog music or some Ska/Rnb. Who knows? The fact that some weird Bollywood and Moog music could be played has me excited.

Our other guest for the evening has been tearing up the Mixcloud play charts for some time now. Representing herself first and foremost, she is also affiliated with Laid Back Radio, Jazzman and Fat City. Expect the unexpected!

Off The Record - Launch Night 22.06.11

Last week was the first in a series of events down at Wax Jambu featuring DJs that will be playing from vinyl only. A novelty in todays digital age with it all being CDs/MP3s and Serato, I thought I would try something a little different.

The previous weekend, I went and say my old dear and picked out some of the old vinyl to play. A mixed bag but mainly from the 70s to 90s. The bag was heavy, as expected. Those pirate radio days of taking 2 bags to radio were definitely a distant memory.

Tonight and every nights music would be going live to the world via Ustream, easy to set up and my trusty first netbook computer came out for the ride. Just need to work out the optimal webcam angle. That would be cool.

Set up for that was pretty straight forward and that, unfortunately, the left deck had seen better times and was kicking out a massive hum. It wasnt to noticeable but, I could hear it. After struggling with it for a while, Jimi, the owner and deck surgeon, took the turntable upstairs to see if he could repair it. We tired it a second time but no joy. So there was live on the floor (no Diplo) deck surgery. I went all 1970 listening party with one turntable. Gotta give thanks to the Motown albums!

Everything was a bit sensitive after the repair but we got it cracking. My good friend Laze Breaks came down to help out. This guy made the digital jump way before me and you can tell. Guy HATES records, but cannot deny the selection he brought down. Michelle from't Leeds was feeling the Jill Scott.

Off The Record @ Wax Jambu, Angel

Every Wednesday at Wax Jambu in Angel is a new night that I am starting. As the name suggests, all the music for the evening will be played from 'off the record'. All vinyl and vinyl only.

Every week I will be inviting down DJs to come down and play music from vinyl. It can be either their influences or stuff they have picked up in the local charity store. Just as long as its from vinyl. 7, 12 or 10 inch.

Alongside the DJs and themed nights will be YOU. If you have a record collection that you would like to share to other people other than your neighbours who bang on the walls then get in touch. You don't have to be a DJ or have DJ experience, just a record collection. You can play from 30 minutes to an hour. I will give you a quick run down on how to use the mixer and from then on in, you will entertain our ears.

I will be thinking of other things to add to the night, there will be some records that can be bought on the night, a swap shop where you can trade records and anything else I can think of really.

This all starts on the 22nd of June 2011 and will be every Wednesday. Each week will have a different theme or guests so just keep checking the internets.

Iceland Stonebaked Pizza Range

So everyone likes pizza, well not everyone. Some people have gluten intolerance and some people, like myself, have lactose intolerance. BUT, cheese is my friend so no Usain Bolt trips to the toilet for me!

Anyway, back to the meat of the post and yes we are talking about some of the finest reformed meats I have ever tasted. Now, I have had a lot of reformed meat in my time, especially placed on top of some bread/pizza base, covered in tomato sauce and layered with cheese. The kid even worked on the pizza counter at ASDA for a minute and we ate good! But this range of pizzas that Iceland is running at the moment is TOTALLY EXCELLENT (Bill and Ted voice)

Adventures in fine food consumption - THE English Breakfast

so here we have what i was ready to consume in the breakfast let me break it down for you hash browns eggs x4 cumberland sausages (john line specials) bacons beans AND sausages chopped tomatoes golden drummers bread mushrooms milk for tea and scrambled eggs no secret ingredients

first line up the oven treat portions of the breakfast. my oven is PERM set to 180 so i just have to flick it on and wait 15 minutes

meat and reformed spuds

on the back of the stove, we got the beans and sausages and the chopped tomats ready to go in tesco beans cost 32p OR you can get beans AND sausages for 35p that was 3p well spent on extra meat methinks

over here, we have the bread ready for toasting, the 2 other slices are for 'mopping up' just incase you know, things are about to get messy

prepping the scrambled eggs, i went with 4 today. felt like a little extra protien after football rebuild them muscles and also try and increase my cholestorol by 10 million

the pre sliced reduced mushrooms have been garnished with salt and pepper and a little olive oil ill let these badboys chiil out for a hot minute

right, the oven treats are being heated up. that means in 20 minutes BREAKFAST WILL BE SURVEDDDDDDDD ITS ON

milk, salt, pepper and a few chilli flakes got whisked up together in the biggest bowl in the house you aint got nothing on my wrist action

the late keith floyd like a drink whist cooking so do i SQUASH

now everything is on the go im like a DJ, heating this up, stirring this, spinning that giving shouts out to sharron on her birthday

bacons have been thrown in the mix lets get a close up

the oven treats are free from the warm place its a bit tight for space in my lab so i dropped these boys on the dish drying apparatus

clunk, warm breadddddd

layer 1 the scrambled eggs (microwaved) go on first

layer 2 place the sausgaes around the eggs with the hash browns stragically placed. there was no more room so 1 drummer went bang ontop

layer 3 lay the bacons over the eggs and sprinkle the mushrooms in the gaps

layer 4 the runny stuff get the beans over as much as possible and fill the remaing holes with the chopped tomatoes letting it seep down on to the bread. YEAHHH

So I am sitting here at my half complete studio desk with a tepid cup of tea to my left, a screen with this and twitter open in front of me, and my TV and ever constant NAS (Network Attached Storage) crunching away downloading me TV shows.

Life at Brokenhomes towers has been pretty stagnant of late. I invested in a new desk to spur some creativity and I have had probably my most unfortunate ebay transaction of my life. Just cursed with bad luck. I mean, were my beats that bad that the powers that be are doing all they can to conspire against me so I cant finish this desk?!? Along with the incomplete desk is the stuff that doesn't have a home any more in the flat. CDs are piled up against the radiator, meaning Ill have to move the CDs if I want some of that British Gas goodness. Books are ontop of my fridge which does make thumbing through pages whilst making Earl Grey very tempting but I usually refrain from such activity. My turntables and records are in my bedroom on the floor. My bedroom is so not happy about this arrangement, so not happy. To accompany the staple bedroom furnishings of bed and wardrobe (no bedside table, too small for such comforts) is a lamp attached to the frame of the bed and my DAB radio on the window sill. Oh and the perpetual drying on clothes on the clothes horse that hasn't been taken down in 3 years.

SO back to where this is all going. Well the first day of sun today made me think about summer and DJing again. Does every year, more this year as I want it to be my outlet for my social activities. Since I stopped DJing on pirate radio I lost most of my friends who were into the music thing. We have grown up, doing other things and chasing other dreams. Like paying bills. Hopefully this DJ thing can get me out of The Palace and let me play some music to people. I am fully aware that my taste in music will probably annoy some people but people shouldn't hate on Rebecca Black. That's my jam right now!

The sibling is away on holiday at the moment and I have to work on his 400th PC so that he can be creative again. Also, I have been watching far to many videos on this Maschine program/hardware combo. If I find £400 behind my sofa I know Ill be heading to Digital Village.

Anyway, thought Id have a mini rant/post as I gotta keep this updated. Soon as the desk is done there should be the podcast on itunes for everyone to grab. There will also be CDs floating around and some stickers are in the pipeline so a couple things.

So grime has been around forever and I guess it will be for even more time but even back in 2004 it was making waves. The inspirational John Peel featured a live Grime segment on his show in 2004 with DJs Eastwood and DJ Krafty. It also featured the lyrical talents of MC Purple, GEE, IE and IQ.

Most of the music on this blog is connected to me and at the 51 minute mark of the set is the Pulse X refix that I made and sent out like wild fire. It was later re bootlegged and released as Pulse Xtra but ill write a story about that one day

So its been way over a month since my last post and I have a genuine reason for the laziness.

Anyway, we the brothers Peakes, Brokenhomes were invited to a wedding on a cruise ship starting off in Miami. We knew it was going to be fun and if you is my friend on facebook y'all ready seen all the pics of the food and everything else that happened in Miami and on the cruise. So this is where we stayed in Downtown Miami. Our family was all up by the airport so we tried to stay somewhere in the middle. Mother of the Brothers Peakes was not to happy about us staying Downtown. She was probably correct, Downtown Miami aint the most exclusive place in the world compared to South Beach but it did its job. PLUS, it was opposite the best/worst takeaway I have ever been to.

Well, that was our resting and eating sorted. (also must make a special mention to S & S Diner, check the reviews. Place was toppa top) As we were not in the party zone/main tourist area of Miami, we decided to have a little stroll over Venetian Causeway one day. That was a tough walk. Check the image for distances and directions.

Daytimes were not a musical affair, although we did listen to alot of Benny Sings

When we did venture over to South Beach for the party, the first night we ended up in this horrible place CAMEOS expensive and gash. What wound me up the most was the DJs girlfriends in the DJ box doing all them lame hand movements. Gash. The music was electro I think, it was the music that is pretty much the same. Build up, drop, electronic bass line, DJs girlfriend moves her hands. We lasted 30 minutes in this club. $20 very well wasted.

The second club we partied in was Mangos Tropical Cafe. We came to party with the Canadian girls (one was celebrating her birthday and was coming on the cruise). We got to the party real late as we were drinking 40s in the hotel room... WHAT?!? BROKENHOMES LIKES TO DRANK!

This club was much better, they played a good selection of rap/rnb and reggaeton (I hate reggaeton). South Beach clubbing is different to London clubbing, only because when we tried to do the cheesy 'ooo ooo' no-one followed up!

The rest of the trip was spent on the Cruise Ship, the thing was huge. Here is a pic of the map they hand out when you get on board. When you see it and then start walking around it you appreciate how much work goes into these floating hotels

We spent most of our late nights in the nightclub on board with a DJ that hated his life. He would play the same music eveeery night and not even mix. Just play solitaire on the other pc. Ah well.

Side A1 - Imosheroy produced by Greedykid

Apparently, the title of this track is a Japanese word. Google cannot find it so that goes that story out the window. Dance music always has strange names. At the height of Greedykid's production there was tracks like this coming out once a week. Its hard to put this track in with much else. Heavy hiphop esq drums but programmed in a slowed down UK Garage style. Its not a reload track but it is a nice piece of music.

Side A2 - Shizuka produced by Greedykid

Shizuka is another Japanese word. This one is a bit more popular in the ol' search results. My fave result was this one here. Brokenhomes are keen fans of Anime, (Fist of The North Star) Shizuka sounds like Godzilla made out of Meccano rigged up to the national grid. The bass is like Zilla sweeping down and chewing up some buildings. Empty sparse production, plenty of room for you to fill the gaps with your mind or new skanks.

Most of what needs to be said was done so here. Here was the popular instrumental version. A hiphop 'stroke' Garage jam built for MCs before they started thinking about making rap tracks.

Side B2 - Grimey Hip Hop produced by Greedykid

This was a beat Louis had that was never finished or was ever going to be finished. Its just one of those loop tracks. All it needs is a vocal and it turns into an instant classic (somewhere). The noise after 16 bars is actually made from phone tones. Maybe it could dial people?! 555-....

Side A - Intro Vol 1 produced by Ray Juss

So this is where it all started. This was the very very first dubplate I ever cut and I will always remember it because of the day I cut it, a terrible terrorist act was happening across the pond. Music House was the most famous cutting shop in the world for a while. It was based in Holloway behind a Taxi mechanics. It all pretty much worked on a word of mouth basis. All I knew was, get there early or your going to have to wait ages. The day I went was 9/11. The 9/11. All that didn't really kick off until my plate was cut and I was on my way home.

Intro 1 was based on the popular soca beat garage tunes like Decoy. I wanted my own to carry that same sort of energy. Guess that's how you want to start a set. UK Garage times anyway. Unfortunately for me and me also being a bit of a shy boy, this dub was cut all on one channel. Makes it more collectable but not every good for playing out. I don't have to worry about that now with the advent of Serato.

The track also features the trademark speak and spell letters spelling out my name. Loads of other weird sounds knocking around in this as well. Think there are some Timbaland esq bird sounds too.

Side B - Baby produced by Ray Juss

Baby was a re working of a garage track at the time which was pretty easy to dissemble. This is how I learnt/got into the remixing side of music. I would take the existing parts of the track. Samples, vox, drum kit and re work it into my own style. When I listen back on this, I don't really like it but it was pretty popular at the time. Maybe I'm getting old! This track gets pretty frantic. Classic memory from this is when a DJ called Spin-e-b cut it and played it on Ice FM. My brother and I was dancing round the stereo on a Saturday afternoon!

The original track was part of the 8 bar revolution that was kicking off in garage all started by this track. DJ EZ really got behind this track and it probably set DJ Wire up for the musical career he has now. This tune was being handed out by the guy at the cutting house. I didn't have anything to cut and on a whim decided to cut the bootleg because it sounded good out loud. I hardly played as I really like the original and DJ Faz mix.

Side B - Gotta Find A Way (Liberty X) remixed by Ray Juss

Up the road from me was a studio called 206, that was the number of the shop it was in. The guy who ran it managed to get hold of some Liberty X parts for a remix they wanted doing. As I was always round the studio, he gave me the acapella. Within a day of two I had made a 4x4 and 2 step remix. The 4x4 mix seems to be lost but I really liked the 2 step version I did and decided to cut it. The remix never got picked up but was fun process.

This was another track I made on a Saturday afternoon. I had the parts of this knocking around for a while. The vocal came from an RnB acapella record someone had left round my house. Interested in finding it to see what it sounds like now. The other obvious sample of you ever followed UK Garage is the 'Wookie' Organ on top of the bass line. Later found out it was a stock sound from the Roland JV sound module. I spent a lot of time working the vocal chops into a whole new song. Works for me.

Side B1 - Slugger produced by Greedykid

Slugger is one of those tracks that if I ever lost it, I would be deeply upset. My ears dont really tollerate rubbish music and I try to stay impartial to all the music we have made. I wasnt one for cutting crap tunes. Hence the reason only a few other tracks make it into dubplate drama. But to think, this track was made by a 15 year old almost a decade ago is scary. The break downs, sparse drums, atmospheric element to the track. It could be early dubstep, it could be a branch of UK Garage. You could even get wanky and throw IDM at it. Whatever you want, Slugger (and its better never to cut remix Slugger Unleashed) will remain a Brokenhomes classic.

Side B2 - Who's Next? produced by Greedykid

You are probably aware of Benga's track 26 Bass lines. Where the tracks bass riff changes every 8 bars?? Well this was of the same ilk, but for MCs. The MCing element was just becoming prevalent in UK Garage with the likes of The Heartless Crew from North London, The Pay As You Go Crew from East and North West's very own BVC (Black Vinyl Crew). Every 16 bars, a new MC gets called in and given a different bass line. An almost hip hop/grime/garage track.

Side A - Intro Vol 2 produced by Ray Juss

Intro dub plates were made very very famous in garage by DJ EZ, this record alone could make 2000 people scream very loudly. As these stories are not in chronological order (obviously, this is vol 2) my second intro dub plate was much different from my first. The track spells out my DJ name at the time, which was Outraygeous. I sampled the letters from an actual Speak and Spell that a friend lent me. Some of those letter have been dropped from my name now. DJ names sound like super hero names to me so I tried to get one as close to day job name of a super hero.. Tony Starks, Clark Kent, Bruce Banner... you get my drift.
Intro 2 took a 4x4 route again and was more of a pumping track. If you listen really carefully you can hear a camera shutter sound inside the beat. Yeah, I had a lot of time on my hands back then. There was also an acapella of the spelling of my name at the end of the track which I used as a DJ tool now and again.

Side B - Impossible to Belive (sp) produced by Ray Juss

Impossible to Belive or Believe as its meant to be was probably a bit out there once again. Big tracks around this time was like Sweet Female Attitude - Flowers and soft 'girly garage' as it was known on the pirates. I, wasn't into that... at all. So, I made a track with the sound of someone walking alone and the sickest most droniest bass line I could find. I once played this at a pub and the bass was so loud from the track, the speaker stack fell over. Wobbly bass lines are all the rage now.

Creation date of this track? End of 2001 early 2002, maybe I could see the future?

This weeks episode is a single sided affair. The deal with cutting dubs at Music House (where this one was done) was if you paid your £25, you were paying for the actual plate so you could come back and get the other side cut when you needed to. I never got anything cut on the other side...

Before Louis came up with the name Greedykid, he was making tracks under the moniker Philosipha. I cannot for the life of me remember where this name came from but, it didn't stick.

This is a rare excursion into the 4x4 sound for Louis, heavily shuffled beats made once again on the decrepit laptop that is now languishing in the top shed under all of Mom's junk. This track got its first spin on Lush FM 107.6 when I had Laze Breaks hosting the show. I'm sure my brother told his friends whilst he was at school that his music was going to be played.
This one is tricky to mix because of the potential 'over shuffle' but still a classic in every way.

Side A - Jeopardy produced by Greedykid

Louis/Greedykid/Brokenhomes V2.0 or whatever name he goes by now features for the first time here. He was about 14/15 when he made this track using an old laptop that was given to my mom by our family friend Tommy. The laptop was so old that it only had a 6GB hard drive. That's retro! When this track was only a few tracks coming out that used a distorted 808 as a bass line. Also the use of 'live' drums was just coming into the garage scene with the likes of DJ Zinc starting the whole 'breakbeat garage' sound and the Bingo Label. As you can tell from the start of this track, I've played it a good few times. One of my favourite Greedykid beats.

Side B1 - Slimey produced by V2G

Now Slimey was made by one of the best MCs out of North West London, Versa. Not only did Vers now how to command a dance, he was pretty nifty on the beats. We would spend hours making stuff on my MPC back in the day. He would bring round cassettes of samples we had found and we would create proto grime tracks. Its a shame that Serato and CDJs were not around back then. Slimey wasn't made at my studio but when Versa played me that track it was like..'I'm cutting that!' The drums bang, just a shame the bass line didn't hold up to well on the dubplate.

Side B2 - Musical produced by Ray Juss

Round this time there was a fad for beat less tracks. It all stemmed from the 'devils mix' of Eskimo by Wiley, where a strong riff could stand out and be a tool for the MCs to really go in on a track. My personal favourite was the creeper bass mix. A friend of mine had it on plate but only because the guy at the cutting house let him cut a copy. You see the person cutting the tunes would sometimes be left the CDs of 'masters' and it was down to him if he wanted to share them. More times, they would. The sample for Musical was picked up off a library music CD I picked up in my local cash converters. Its just a quick loop and I used it as a tool for switching between tracks. Its pretty effective.

Side A - Perfect produced by Ray Juss

This track was a cut up of a few Todd Edwards tracks. At the time I was experimenting with the 4x4 side of garage and to be honest, stealing other peoples sounds and trying to make them my own. Perfect was something I was pretty proud of at the time and decided to cut it although it didn't really fit into the type of garage I was playing at the time. This track also featured on my only vinyl release, Rushgroove Vol 1. This dubplate version has an extra set of hi hats in it making it a kind of exclusive.

Side B - All Stars (Full Vocal Mix) produced by Ray Juss

Round the time of making this, there was a fashion for making multi drop tunes as made famous buy the Pay As You Go crew and DJ Slimzee. I wanted to have my own type but I used acapellas from records I had that would fit in the garage tempo. The beat was fashioned from a Lil Kim record that I heard out in Canada whilst on holiday and the spin back between each vocal was an idea of a friend of mine, Amish. He came round on the Saturday I was making it and from there it stuck. The instrumental version became quite famous getting plays on Choice FM from DJ Chrissy G. Oh and the 'outraygeous' vocal sample came from one of those Stephen Hawkins esq computer programs!

Dubplate Drama - New Season

You may or may not of seen on my to-do list but I wanted to do a regular feature sooo here is one of them. Dubplate Drama is not the TV show but a historic look back at some of the dubplates I have sitting around.

Dubplate (from wikipedia) - A dubplate is an acetate disc — usually 12 inches, 10 inches or 7 inches in diameter — used in mastering studios for quality control and test recordings before proceeding with the final master, and subsequent pressing of the record to be mass produced on vinyl. The "dub" in dubplate is an allusion to the plate's use in "dubbing" or "doubling" the original version of a track. The name dubplate also refers to an exclusive, 'one-off' acetate disc recording pioneered by Reggae sound systems but also used by drum and bass and other dance music artists, DJs and sound systems.

Ill be going through adding a little story to the plate and giving the track away for download recorded from the dubplate with all its crusty glory. These records are unique, one off's and each one of these records cost £25. Some of these records were cut at either the world famous Music House in Holloway or Liquid Mastering in Staples Corner.

I hope these stories will give you an insight into how tunes come around and the production process that goes into it.

So in true disorganised fashion I decided to have a brainstorm (I am aware this word is now un-pc). I sat in a room today at work away from everyone else on a rare internal lunch break and made this list of things I need to do.

Parts are what I need to do to get others involved but that's a whole different story.

Whilst it was good for getting all these ideas down, it wasn't all that great for productivity in the day job. I hear girls suffer from email fatigue more than guys. I suffer from 'answer/fix/tell me/will you/can you/is it possible to/do/this/that' fatigue.

That Was...11th March 2010 Run down

Just getting round to doing this write up, has been a busy week-ish in the world of brokenhomes.

That Was... took place last Thursday at one of the best styled venues in NW London, The Gallery, Hendon. Location is probably lacking but you cannot fault the interior. Anyway, due to some unfortunate circumstances, Lazy Eye from the Black Vinyl Crew had to pull out. (we with you brother). I called the venue and let them know that I would like to start the event at 8pm. I got the all clear so got everything set.

On reaching the venue, I wrote out the guest list for the evening downstairs whilst having a cup of tea and going through the texts and emails from the week with names.

After all that was done, I popped upstairs to check the system. Technology seems to have something against me at the moment. The left deck had no slip mat and then on further examination, it was only pumping out the left channel. So to remedy this I made both decks play one channel and pumped the volume up. DJ Leisure brought a spare slip mat which was lucky and we sorted out the CD decks whilst no one was in the venue.

As it stared early it stayed empty for a while. My brother, Greedykid/Louis/brokenhomes v2.0 turned up. He wanted to have a quick clang/mix so I decided to let him take over. Turns out that he did the first set up until 9pm. His first ever play out. I stepped up from 9 and luckily as Louis and I were working from the same bag, he didn't play all the A-Sides. From the DJ box I could see the venue slowly filling up. It wasn't going to be a road block affair as I hardly promoted it. It was a Facebook and word of mouth thing only. By the end of my set, just after 10, we had hit maximum which was 60 people. Pretty good for a venue which is normally closed on a Thursday and just a local word of mouth promotion. I was told by the head doorman that a promoter came in and brought 3 people the last week. #epicfail.

Next DJ was Grumpy aka Steve James aka Solo G. He provided the soundtrack up until 11pm. DJ Leisure stepped up after going home to get more CDs! As he was playing CDs, he played last as he was going to be the loudest DJ of the night. After some unplugging and plugging back in we got the CDs working again. I don't know how they stopped working. It was a good plan as by 12 we had some people on the dance floor.

Feedback from the evening was it was a real good get together and people were asking me if I would do another one. I probably would but I think for that venue to be a success, there would have to be a compromise in my music integrity and I'm not sure if I could do that. We shall see, its a big moral question.

Brainfeeder March 10th 2010 Run down

As we got into the trilogy of Brainfeeder events, the location had moved from the Hearne Street car park to the old abattoir, Fabric nightclub. The line up (as you can see from the flyer) was pretty nuts. During the week I got an email telling me that the event had been fully sold out and with that they furnished me with the set times.

There was a change up in set times as Tokimonsta was up first. We walked into the venue shouting, DRAPPPPPPPESSS and CLEAAAAARRRRRRRR from Tempa T's new track Next Hype. Toki was laying the beats down pretty thick. She grabbed the mic and asked everyone to come closer which was really sweet. Tokimonsta is less animated than the other live beat performers that I have seen but the power was all in the beats. Her set finished and the next live show was coming from Nosaj Thing on the other side of the stage. Now I am aware of this guys work but only through previews from Boomkat so I was pretty interested in hearing this guy get down. We were not disappointed. He moved from banger to banger with the fluid Flying Lotus esq body snap that comes with these type of digtal sludge music. His set was unfortunately interrupted buy a technical failure. Checking out his twitter, looks like his MPD had failed him. It was a brief rest bite and kicks and snares were banging through the meaty Fabric sound system in a matter of seconds. A lot of NEXT HYPESSS and CLEARRRRS were being let off from the BROKENHOMES boys.

Next up was the shy beat smith who goes by the name of Dimlite. He approached his equipment hooded up but not in an aggressive way. More to shield himself from the eyes of the crowd. He picked up headphones which is not normal for anyone from this scene and then sang on his first track. Dimlite's music isnt as hype as some of the other beat makers. The tempo is reduced but the bass... increased! This stuff can make you feel drunk. Its so wooozy but I really got into it. Gaslamp touched mic to heat up the set and Dimlite moved into his final tracks. It was only due to an incorrect button push that Dimlite's set ended. I think he had another few minutes left in him. He shied away from the crowd and thanked us.

Up on the Serato was The Mother Fucking Gas Lamp Killer! We were waiting on this set because he always brings the heat to the dance. We also wondered if he would play Unicron's Toothache and what our reaction would be. It was agreed that some girls would get punched in the face if it came on! He started off with some incidental music to clear our heads and slowly moved into the wobble-fest. I had never seen him so animated, he was running up and down the stage and doing some serious moshing. It was nuts, that energy just transferred into the crowd! He hit us with a VIP version of Chase and Status' Eastern Jam and some tune with Take me higher sample. It was madness. After the wobble fest he brought us into the rock and roll side of the set and then showcased his track with Warp records latest signing, Gonjasufi. He hit us with Cowboys and Indians of the album which is out now. The set came to a close after he went back to playing the beats, probably one of the most memorable DJ sets I will ever see.

Deadalus was ready to start on his custom light box playing all sorts of beats. Now its pretty hard to follow on from The GLK and for us boys it showed. Not that we didn't enjoy it but we knew what we wanted to hear and the constant teasing of tracks and multiple layers was a bit too much for our ears. He did sneak in a little bit of Red and Yellow toys and some other things I noticed but they never got a full play out.

This was all a pre cursor to the main man behind Brainfeeder, The Flying Lotus. Now the last time I saw him, I wasn't that interested. He played a lot of dubstepy stuff that I wasn't feeling and I had that 'play something we know' head on. FlyLo has made some certified classics in this scene. Tea Leaf Dancer, Orbit Brazil and Massage Situation to name but a few. BUT, we had to give him a chance tonight to unleash the new stuff and most of the crowd were here to see him. He didn't disappoint, most of the tunes we didn't know but they all banged. We did hear the faint synth sound of Mono/Polys - Red and Yellow Toys but he didn't let it fly. We just went nuts at the hint of it. He drew for a massage situation edit and everyone raised their hands for that.

Overall it was a great Brainfeeder. We only stayed for 30 mins of J.Rocc's set where he did the whole Sample/Dilla beat that he did when he was over with Madlib.

It would never touch the car park vibes but lets see if they all pop over again in the summer

So after much emailings and harassing of people, I got put on to play some tracks. Wont go into how it all came about but will thank Bensamba and the people of Wax Jambu for having me. Was really good to be able to play music I liked.

The day didn't start to well as we lost at football 2-1, I took a nasty tackle which left my ankle quite purple but didn't really feel it until after the game. Because of football and my timing skills I was a tad late to get to the venue. Was greeted by Louis and Nathan and then shown the booth. (I have no camera on my old skool blackberry so it will have to be words for this report). This was going to be the first time I had ever used Serato outside of my house and I was pretty nervous about it. Technology has a habit of failing. I <3 computers but sometimes, you know..
Didn't help realising that my Serato laptop only has 256mb of Ram, Serato needs 1GB min. I went with the 'its worked before so why shouldn't it now?' ideal.

After much wire swapping and moving things around, I was ready to pick my first track. Some ladies in front of the booth were already dropping in requests. The first one of Candi Staton - You've got the love got batted away. Then in a weird coincidence or my skill of selecting, she asked for Last night a DJ saved my life... I had already lined it up on the deck. (ROOOOD BOY, TOP SELECTAAAAA). The laptop was on the other deck at this time, when I switched off in house music to go with my stuff it all stared going weird. As the track was playing it was dropping out and changing speed. I crapped it and drew for the emergency CDs from the bag, once the laptop was seated on the shelf, it all kinda levelled out. There was one other drop out and a loop that I set went crazzzy but its all teething problems with a new system.

Once all was up and running, I went in with the tracks. Was picking anything and everything from the 90-110 bpm range and just getting drunk with the crowd. One guy asked for some names of tracks so I helped him out. Also met some big Dilla fans and had a great chat about hip hop and beats. I also witnessed some of the craziest dancing I had ever seen.

My set finished just after 11 and Bensamba took over, first track - Bullion. The roof got a good slap when that dropped. He picked up the pace and took us through house, tropical vibes and even the garage staple God Made me Funky. By this time I was full of grape and doing some crazy shapes with the girls (shower rangers).

So hopefully I will be down at that venue again. And for those that are interested, below is the track listing from last night.

February being a short month and all, not much really happened. But much good news to bring from now!! Here are the details of a booking and a potential regular night in my old area, Hendon.

First up is

Ill be playing the 8-11pm slot so warming you up and making sure you hit the bar allot and not mess with your senses to much!

Ill be playing some serious beats, nothing to hard but ill be aiming to make someone pull a grime face when I play some 8-bit induced space funk. Expect a good time, full Brokenhomes team will be in attendance so we will see you there!

Next up is...

The return of the local DJs to the best looking venue around. THAT WAS... @The Gallery, Hendon - 407 - 411 Hendon Way, London, NW4 3LH.

I have tried to reassemble some of my mates/djs to come down and play some records of the UK Garage variety. I really hope this does well so that it can be potentially moved to a weekend or we can get a nice vibe going on a Thursday once a month. The word has been put out and there are 10 DAYS TILL THE DAY!!!

Drinks are at ASDA price so come down and listen to some Anthill Mob and Steve Gurley!

Brief Update - Dates and Non stop emailings

So after many emails and calls the Brokenhomes team have had some results.

This will just be a brief outline before I get all the proper details. Guess you could say, check them out after the jump. But anyway first off, big thanks out to Bensamba and the Genre crew, Ill be down there on 6th March (Wax Jambu) playing some beats from 8-11

Next up, Ill be launching a night down at the Gallery, Hendon on 11th March playing the best in UK Garage. That date is going to come pretty quick but I am sure I can fix things up before then.

Further updates to follow, will update the calender and set up a few more things webwise so you can keep track of your favourite beat junkies

Brokenhomes Euro Tour

So I am out in Switzerland on a holiday to see my friend with my friends and I thought I would do some reconnaissance on the club/bar scene.

My DJ teacher is also out here in Switzerland but I plan to come back and see him soon. I can imagine he parties hard so im gonna have to go into training for that one!

Back to the point in hand, reconnaissance wasn’t really all about just going to as many bars and clubs as we could fit in over the few days but its kinda worked out that way.

Our travels have taken us to small intimate bars, large dancehall venues and a plush west end club.

I cannot remember all the names of the venues I had been to so far but I luckily got pics of a couple flyers and the interiors of them. Ill go through each one

The first is at the end of my mates road, he lives in what he calls the Old Street of Zurich.

Down stairs played some deep house but the main attraction was the very low ceilings and hundreds of light bulbs running really low wattage through them. Upstairs held about 40 people and had its own bar and DJ corner. Another bonus was the pole for the girls. This place would be sweet for some beats

The second venue was much larger, it was kind of like bagleys/canvas before it went away. The night we went on was a dancehall night with DJ Ali Baba. Lame name but he is quite a name.

When the lads were getting take away from the Thai place i saw the flyer for the night we attended. Check the dude out, he knows Paris Hilton (lucky dude?)

The last place we hit up was Jade, this was the swankiest place. It was like the London West End night clubs im guessing. I don't go to those places but everyone here was well dressed and very good looking. Guys and Girls. Here are a few choice snaps from the evening

Overall, doing something with regards to music in Switzerland would be a really good time and experience. Seeing as my mate lives in such a lively area of Zurich, this could happen?

Numbers live at Fabric Jan 8th 2010 - The Breakdown

Numbers is a collection of labels from Scotland, the info on the sub labels that make em up is easy to find online but these guys are the people responsible for putting out some of the best electronic music in the low swung future hip hop and bass right now.

Headlining the event was the almighty Todd 'The God' Edwards. A house music producer out of New Jersey, America. Now, if you were ever into UK Garage then you would of definitely been aware of Todd's cut up re sampled productions. I’ve been playing this guys records for easily over 10 years and although the detractors say that each record he makes sounds the same, there is no denying the power hidden in the sine wave sub bass and sample skills of the man.

Also on the bill was the one and only Hudson Mo. I first got onto this guys beats through the Beat Dimensions mix CD. Not much was known about him on his own then as he was laying stuff down with Mike Slott under the Heralds of Change moniker. After much searching around the internet I managed to get hold of Hudsons Heeters Vol 1, a beat CD dropped around 2006. After that, to coin a phrase, 'ITS WAS ONNNNNNNNN'. Free Mo played at loud volume can help people fly through time and the free myspace track which landed on his album ZoOoOm had my work colleges telling me to turn my headphones down the first time I heard it.

The was also alot of activity planned for the other rooms within Fabric, room 2 was host to a dubstep/dnb event and room 3 was the launch party of Fabrics latest CD, Elevator Music. An offshoot of dubstep, uk garage, elements of grime and this new UK Bass music. I didn’t manage to sample these rooms which is a shame because I hear it went down in room 3.

I spent most of the evening in the pub on my own doing a spot of Anthropology. Watching chicks get drunk, a guy pump a fruit machine (no homo) and being tempted to try and talk to an old man about football but this guy looked like he was on 'the register'. All the while I had the sounds of devonwho, Tall Black Guy and The Essentials in one ear. I also created the POWER snake BYTE, that was yummy and put me in good stead for the evening.

Hudson was on before Todd and was doing a live show. I was at Mr Mo's first live show down at Plastic People last year and although I enjoyed standing next to the speaker when Polka Dot blues dropped, the set was pretty in cohesive and obviously he was working out the joys of Abelton. This time, Hudson nailed it. With the livley Oliver Day Soul on mic it was definitely a show! Im not a fan of laptop shows but I could tell there was work gone into this. Hudson kicked off the set with a live drum remix of ZoOoOm which was FUCKING NUTS! I don’t know how it worked but it did and I want that track! The set moved with tracks of the new album Butter but mainly concentrated on his more well known beats taken from Heeters and off the EP he dropped last year. His last show opened with a lot of soundscapes, Star Crackout from the album had been moved to near the end of the show. A beat less haunting track which you can tell Hudson enjoys. Oliver Day Soul got his chance to perform doing a great version of Bopgunn (hit em with the..), Joy Fantastic and Just Decided. Oliver bounded around the stage whilst Hudson gave it the Fly Lo esq head nodding (y'all need to go Brainfeeder to see that!). Oliver finished and Hudons dropped the Tweet - Opps bootleg which probably got the biggest reaction all night. This track BANGS. Can’t wait for him to work with some US artist and bring back the funk that Timbaland left behind.

After some room viewing and looking for the pill heads on the stairs, we headed back to Room 1 for the biblical sounds of Todd Edwards. Now, I use the word biblical because Todd is a devout Christian and quite a few of his tunes feature this message. Tracks such as Wanting Jesus with the legendary UK Garage outfit Tuff Jam, Shut The Door (Healed from Within Dub) and a whole host of other tracks. Now, the main reason for Todd Edwards being as big is he is, is down to DJ EZ. EZ has played and supported his music throughout the years and I think was the first person to actually bring him over to perform. An event I went to in Atlantis in Croydon, that was A LONG TIME AGO. Being fair, Todd isnt the best DJ in the world, in fact, I think with a bit of Ray coaching, my old dear could do better but this is his only outlet from behind the Akai S6000 so we have to give it to him. Todd doesn’t play anyone else’s music, it’s a 4x4 fest of straight Todd dubs and when it’s loud and there’s a vibe. It goes OFF! The thing with Todd Edward tracks is they are pretty hard to remember, you can’t really sing them or hum them but on hearing them, the track is instantly recognizable. I went with my mate who LOVES Todd Edwards tracks, not as much as The Britsh Vybes Council but he could easily play hours worth of Todd tracks.

Todd kicked off his set with new and exclusives of none I knew, but that didn’t matter, the whole of room one was jammmed and bumping up and down to the skippy chopped beats and that simple but effective sine wave sub bass. Todd was throwing out glow in the dark crucifixes for the crowd. Kinda like new 'age' rave. Probably freaked a few people out but at least he didn’t give a sermon this time. The new music was fun but I just wanted to go up to him and ask him to draw something from the archive. He did, and when it hit it was like a mosh pit! He drew for the pirate classic, As I Am (dance on pants is what we used to sing). Everyone went nuts to it and that was the hi light of the set, he even wheeled it. He moved into some other exclusives, a Craig David - What’s Your Flava dub that I’ve NEVER heard and a special track dedicated to the people of London which was banging. Was a good set by the man but would never touch the EZ and Todd sets from back in the day.

After all this I was wrecked and cut out. Was a good night held by The Numbers lot and expect good things for the future. It’s also good so see people actually taking notice of UK Garage now.

A Year in a Broken Home

So, another year has passed and we are sitting on more and more beats.
Its all fun, we like collecting. We get the hoarding trait from our mother.

Not much really happened musically for us, hi lights include The Gas Lamp Killer re tweeting Unicrons Toothache. The release of the mini album, the GrimeBlast series of mixes and me getting hold of Serato for the BeatBlast mixes.

2009 really launched us into the whole beat scene. Going to the Brainfeeder events and making friends with Mono/Poly and Busy and other guys we look up to in the whole beat scene. Louis has been collecting alot of good music from E-music and the same I getting alot of good promos coming through the work channels. In our personal lives, most of our time has been dominated by our day jobs. Hopefully for next year we can concentrate on getting the music out off our hard drives and onto the net.

2010 should be an interesting year. Trying to get a buzz and get a few things sorted out. We have a Caribbean cruise to pay for so we will be putting in the work this year. I will continue to update the blog with our progress. I am always tempted to write about all the good music I find or things which are happening around the world but ill be keeping this dedicated to the plight of the Brokenhomes brothers.

So keep reading, I know alot of you do and we/I appreciate that. So do what ever you can to spread the word and the music. Because your gonna need to do something for us for them guest list passes.

So i had this idea around February time, it was meant to drop for the 14th but I've only juss got around to doing it, well, I been busy what can i say?

Last night I needed a new bottle of juice for the palace so I popped to the retail emporium for said juice. I fancied some brandy but I didn't realise that stuff is pretty expensive and I'm only gonna wee it out so I opted for some cheap vodka. None of that paint stripper £6 stuff, Red Square. Some of you will be aware of the brand. I matched it up with some cranberry juice as I don't really deal with carbonated beverages and took it home and set the mood.

Dropped some vodka in my 19p mug from Asda and filled the rest up with cranberry. Drew for the Serato laptop (that's not the portable one, not the media one nor the main one or even the one that doesn't even have an application yet), the closed back headphones and got to work.

The concept of the mix goes out to the guys really. We have all been done over by a chick(s) in our lives and this CD is equivalent to going out with the lads getting drunk and pulling a lagoon creature. We have ALL been there. So yeah, there is a few soft moments on here, (yes we do have feelings and emotions girls, we just dont want to talk about them 24/7!) but mainly its misogynistic in all its glory.

When I was younger I was into the whole DJing thing and the mystery of the DJ. I used to watch this film alllll the time with one of my best mates from when I was little. This scene where Martin Lawrence who plays Bilal the dragon breath DJ speaks to Kid about the selection for the party. He mentions about covering the labels so that any other DJs present couldn't copy the stuff he was playing. Now he is talking about easily accessible vinyl. Today's DJs could get soooo deep with the music but I feel a lot don't take full advantage. Back on my DJing days on North West London's premier pirate radio station, Lush 107.6FM. I used to pride myself in playing tracks other DJs wouldn't or couldn't play. Early broken beat, electro, battle records. These tracks were never faves, but they just made me stand out from the other DJs who were on the station.

Another note, DJs have become very lazy when looking for music. They rely on it being sent to them or it being plugged by someone else. I have been tapping up a few producers for a while now, keeping their names almost a secret. Its the old skool DJ in me that wants to stay one step ahead of the pack. DJs should enjoy 'diggin' in its virtual form. With so many genres crossing and freely available music (not stealing) sets should become incredibly varied and diverse. All we need now is the open minds on the dance floors or propping up the bar.

We must educate and not fear the unknown!

In todays saturdated bar and club market, alot of venues play it very safe and play the same generic music. Im not sure as if they feel that music is not an integral part to the clientel of their establishment or if that hiring a DJ to play the most popular tracks around is what people want?

When I was 18, I held a UK Garage event in my local 'dive'. The place was called The Glen, its still there as a late drinking but under the name Funky Browns. 11 years ago UK Garage was tiny, the only events around the local area were in function rooms of football clubs. The legendary parites of Edgware and Kingsbury town. Local DJs made a name for themselves playing the best in UK Garage at the time. This music was filtered round through cassettes of larger events and the pirate radio network. But each DJ in these events had his own sound. The scene, still in its infancy, still allowed the DJ to select sounds and tracks that he wanted to play for the crowd. DJs developed their own followings depending on the tracks they played and this was all decided off the back off 1 or 2 hour sets in small venues and sometimes bedroom cassettes floating around.

Today, music is rife. There is actually so much music out there that it is frightning. What seems to be missing from all this new music is the open minds of the audiences. People have come acustom to going out and hearing a certain genre of music. Or even more disturbing, knowing their favourite track will be played by the DJ on the night.

Audiences really need to open up and allow the DJ to once again shepard them through all the junk and lead them to the gems of music. Once venues and punters start to realise this, music will not just be a human playing the best of MTV Base on a couple of CDJs at the bar

Right,

Sitting at me mums house with one headphone in listening to the end of the Charity Sheild. Looks like the team with no history will make the first scalp of the year.

Anyway i made a few (Wayne Rooney JUST SCORED!) updates to the bloggus. There is now a new search feature, you can type one of your fave beat makers/artists into the search and see if they feature on one of the mixes.
